The worst type of interview is celebrities interviewing other celebrities. Glossy magazines love to publish them and bore everyone but the subjects to tears. “Tell me,” Gwyneth Paltrow might ask Taylor Swift, “Why are you so beautiful and talented?” “Oh, I’m just dedicated to my craft,” will come the humble reply. “But let me ask you something. Why are they you so beautiful and talented?”
Second worst genre: journalists interviewing other journalists. Which brings us to Amol Rajan Interviews: Piers Morgan (BBC iPlayer).
The first problem with this is that journalism is a small world, so the two are a little close for comfort. Both are big beasts of the media world and Rajan he clearly admires Morgan a lot. The tone was too friendly. At one point they went to a pint. Not that every interview has to be a Paxman-esque rampage, but a little suspense won’t go amiss.
Another problem in this particular case is that you cannot ignore a man who masters the genre. Morgan has interviewed people for so long that he knows the game. The questions that Rajan hoped would have the most impact just floated to the floor. “Are you praying?” “When was the last time you were nice, does this hurt the brand too much?” “Are you a narcissist or something?” He asked if Morgan’s well-documented hatred of the Duchess of Sussex was rooted in misogyny, but didn’t back off when Morgan said he was equally critical of her husband.
Rajan entered with tough questions phone hacking at Mirror Group Newspapers. But all he got back were rejections and eventually he let Morgan go back to criticizing the Duke of Sussex.
That’s not to say the meeting was boring. Morgan understands entertainment and has made a career out of expressing candid opinions. “I like meeting the type of people I would avoid,” he said cheerfully, while claiming he’s hated by people in the Twitter bubble, but gets a much warmer reception from people on the street.
In fact, “candidly” only goes halfway to Morgan’s thoughts on Alex Beresford, the weather presenter who prompted him to quit Good Morning Britain – and ultimately quit his job – during the heated debate over Ms Markle. “Just for the record, I think he’s a sneaky little p—k,” Morgan said, momentarily startling Rajan into silence.
Morgan was adamant about the “woke” culture wars and was enthusiastic in his assessment of his employer, Rupert Murdoch (“the greatest media personality of my lifetime, perhaps ever, in terms of his boldness, his vision, his worldwide reach”). You were left with the feeling that Morgan would have given the same account of himself when he was talking to the bathroom mirror, making Rajan rather redundant.
The Amol Rajan Interviews: Piers Morgan airs on BBC Two tonight at 7pm
