Ukraine war: Russia unleashes drones on Kiev in major attack on capital

Several districts of Kyiv, including the historic Pecherskyi neighborhood, were damaged in the overnight attacks, officials said.

Mayor Vitalij Klitschko confirmed one victim this morning. He says a 41-year-old man was killed by falling debris.

The Ukrainian Air Force claims it managed to shoot down 52 of the 54 Russian drones that threatened Kiev overnight.

The pre-dawn attacks took place on the last Sunday in May, when the capital celebrates Kyiv Day, the anniversary of its official founding 1,541 years ago.

“Ukraine’s history is a protracted provocation for insecure Russians,” Andriy Yermak, head of President Volodymyr Zelensky’s office, said on his Telegram channel.
