Succession has reached its dramatic conclusionwith the new CEO of Waystar Royco finally decided.
The acclaimed dark comedy series, which follows the Roy siblings’ battle to take control of their late father’s media company, aired its fourth and final season finale on HBO and Sky Atlantic on Sunday (May 28).
Loyalties between the trio shifted throughout the episode, leading to a tense and shocking conclusion that fans praised.
*Spoilers ahead – you have been warned*
After Kendall (Jeremy Strong) discovers that techie brother Lukas Matsson (Alexander Skarsgård) plans to backstab Shiv (Sarah Snook) by hiring an alternative American CEO for the GoJo deal, he manages to convince his sister and Roman (Kieran Culkin) that the only way , to spoil his plans is to vote against the deal and appoint Kendall as the main man. They both agree.
Shiva’s estranged husband Tom Wambsgans (Matthew Macfadyen) is the CEO Matsson has in mind and is reluctant to tell Shiva the plan. When Shiv angrily breaks the news to his brothers, they head to a board meeting where they all plan to vote against the deal and to retain control of their father’s media empire.
Everything goes according to plan until Shiv falters when he casts the deciding vote, and Kendall is stunned that his sister has suddenly reneged on her vow. After a tense showdown in which Kendall turns violent, Shiv votes to make a deal with GoJo and Tom is named CEO of Waystar Royco.
In Shiva’s last scene of the show, she is seen sitting next to Tom in the car. She wishes him congratulations, which he declines with “No, no.” Instead, he places his open palm on the armrest between them. Shiv reluctantly places her hand on his.

Shiva’s scenes are being analyzed by fans, who are avidly theorizing about the exact moment she decided to turn her back on Kendall, which is the episode’s director, Mark Mylod, has now confirmed.
Some believe it happened when Kendall sat in her father’s chair, with camera footage showing a visibly hurt Shiv, while many believe it happened during Kendall’s arrogant performance before the vote.
Others believe that Shiv may have decided to vote for GoJo when she realized she had the deciding vote and saw one last chance to usurp her brother once and for all. After all, it seems likely that Tom, who is the father of Shiv’s unborn child, will employ her in some way, meaning that Roy will be the only one with some control over his father’s legacy. In that way, it’s a win of sorts for Shiv, who would undoubtedly be sidelined under Kendall.

However, the passive manner in which she placed her hand on Tom’s left fans feeling heartbroken for a character who struggled so much to overcome the misogyny she had to deal with so often on the show. For Shiv to win, she had to leave the lead role to her husband. In Matsson’s own words, the pregnant Shiv is “the woman’s baby”, while Tom got the job because he was “the one who put the baby in her”.
Taking the scene more literally, Shiv does they have an advantage, which could mean that Tom will be more of a puppet to be played by those around him.
The scene draws comparisons to Jan van Eyck’s Arnolfini portrait, in which a couple can be seen with their hands positioned in the same way. It is noted that this gesture is a sign of union in ancient Roman beliefs. Historian Margaret Koster’s analysis of the painting reads the position of the hands as a sign of a husband clinging to the hand of his pregnant wife as her life slips away. I’m translating this into Successionlife in this case could reflect the couple’s career.

Viewers also believe there was an off-screen phone chat between the two prior to the committee’s vote. The theory is that Tom may have secured Shiv a role at Waystar Royco if she approached Kendall.
Others believe that Tom’s dismissal of Hugo (Fisher Stevens) in favor of Caroline could be a clue to this. Just before the vote, Waystar’s PR Karolina is lobbying for Hugo’s dismissal. Right after, Shiv sees Kendall sitting in his father’s chair and leaves Kendall and Roman together. Could you call Tom at this stage? It’s very likely that, if she has, she’s made a proposal to Karolina (Dagmara Dominczyk) and Gerri (J Smith Cameron), who Tom wants on board.
The Succession the finale aired a few days after fan shared his wild (and ultimately accurate) theory about how she knew Tom would win.
