A policewoman fights back tears as she announces the death of an eight-year-old at Wimbledon School
An eight-year-old girl was killed behind the Land Rover and 15 others were injured crashed into an all-girls prep school in Wimbledon, police confirmed.
An end-of-term tea party was said to have been held at The Study Prep School on Camp Road when the accident happened at around 10am on Thursday.
Detective Chief Superintendent Clair Kelland’s voice broke as she told a news conference: “Sadly one of the children, an eight-year-old girl, died at the scene.”
She added: “This is a very difficult time for everyone here at the school and in the wider community.”
A 40-year-old woman was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and remains in custody.
Study Prep Wimbledon, with pupils aged four to 11, declined to comment on the incident.
The girls’ school is located about a mile from the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, currently home to the Wimbledon Grand Slam.

Flowers were laid near the school as a sign of respect for the victim of the traffic accident
Flowers have been laid near the school where a girl died in a car crash in Wimbledon.
New Malden residents Sophia Graham, 27, and Tayla Landsberg, 22, who brought flowers to the police cordon, said: “When we found out one of the children had died, it was terrible.

“When the police announced it, it was so sad to see that they even got emotional. This had a profound effect on everyone. “Kids walk freely on the Common without a second thought.”
Ms Landsberg said: “It’s usually very peaceful, very bubbly with lots of fun activities.”

Sadiq Khan offers condolences on death of eight-year-old girl
Mayor of London Sadiq Khan said: “I am heartbroken at the news that an eight-year-old girl has died so tragically following an incident at a school in Wimbledon.
“My thoughts are with her loved ones, the school and the wider community at this extremely difficult time and on behalf of all Londoners I want to offer my deepest condolences.
“My heart goes out to all those affected, including the other children and adults who were injured in this incident, and I wish them all a full recovery.”

What did the politicians say about the accident?
The Prime Minister’s official spokesman said Rishi Sunak thanked the emergency services for their quick response.
A spokesman said: “The Prime Minister offers his deepest condolences to the family of the girl who tragically lost her life.
“His thoughts are with all those injured and involved in the horrific collision at Wimbledon this morning.
“It will be a terrifying experience for all the children, staff and parents
Mr Hammond said he was “very concerned” to learn of the “major incident”, adding: “My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone at The Study.”
He told the BBC: “An extremely upsetting and tragic incident on the last day of the deadline … a major incident has actually been declared. An ambulance, an ambulance, the fire brigade and the police are present.’

What do the police say about the accident?
Police are not treating the incident as a terrorist attack.
Detective Chief Superintendent Clair Kelland, local police commander for South West London, said: “This is tragic news and our thoughts are with the girl’s family and friends and everyone affected today.
“We remain at the scene and continue to investigate all the circumstances of the incident.”
A large police cordon extends onto Wimbledon Common, where officers move dog walkers and passers-by away from the scene. An air ambulance was at the edge of the shared street, while several ambulances were parked nearby hours after the crash.

Who are the victims?
An eight-year-old girl died, but her identity has not yet been revealed. About 15 people were injured in the incident, who were treated at the scene, and 10 were taken to hospital.
Many of the injured are being treated as critical, says Stephen Hammond, Conservative MP for Wimbledon.

The The Metropolitan Police said he was called at 9:54 a.m. to report that a car had crashed into a building at the school.
The London Fire Brigade attended the scene, along with 15 ambulances and an air ambulance.

The Land Rover is understood to have been driven by a woman who suffered a medical incident, reports The Evening Standard. Police said the driver of the vehicle stopped at the scene, but declined to confirm the possible cause of the crash.
A gold Land Rover is said to have crashed during an “end of term tea party”, with reports to A mirror they claim that “the children were sitting on the grass with their teachers” when the car crashed into them.
London Ambulance Service said 16 people were treated at the scene.

Detective Chief Superintendent Clair Kelland, of the Metropolitan Police, said: “I am here to inform you following today’s tragic incident here in Wimbledon. “We were called shortly before 10am this morning after a car crashed into a building at The Study Preparatory School, behind me on Camp Road. “Many of our officers were sent to the scene, along with paramedics from London Ambulance Service and London Air Ambulance.
“Our police officers, together with colleagues from other rescue services, provided first aid to many injured people.
“Unfortunately, one of the children, an eight-year-old girl, died at the scene.
“Our thoughts are with her family at this incredibly difficult time.
“The driver of the car, a woman in her 40s, stopped at the scene.
“She was detained on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and detained. “This is a very difficult time for everyone here at the school and in the wider community.
“We would ask people not to speculate while we work to understand the full circumstances of what happened.
“We are not treating this incident as terrorism-related.
“Our officers have already spoken to a number of witnesses and viewed CCTV.
