China could try to ‘water down’ AI rules at UK summit, says ex-Tory leader
Sir Iain Duncan Smith claimed China could attempt to “water down” conclusions and suggested new rules on artificial intelligence at a summit hosted by the UK next week.
The former Tory leader said Beijing should not have been invited to attend the summit at Bletchley Park.
He told Sky News: “The big threat is that they get into this meeting and of course make sure that there isn’t really any great new set of rules or observances that should be made because they don’t suit China. And that’s where the problem arises.”
Sir Iain said China “poses the single biggest threat to us in this area” of AI and genomics.
He added: “My view is that I didn’t want them to invite China originally because I felt that with their dominance in these two areas, they would water down anything that we came to any conclusions of.”
His comments came after Liz Truss urged Rishi Sunak to rescind the invitation extended to Beijing.
Poll: Three quarters believe Sunak has not achieved much in first year in No10
More than three quarters of voters believe the Government has not achieved much in Rishi Sunak’s first year in No10, according to a new poll.
Mr Sunak marked his one year anniversary as Prime Minister on Wednesday this week and he tweeted that he believed “we’ve achieved a lot in the year since I became PM”.
YouGov asked voters in a survey conducted yesterday how much they believed the Government had achieved in the last 12 months.
Some 40 per cent said “not much at all” and 37 per cent said “not very much”, making 77 per cent in total for “not much”.
In contrast, some 14 per cent of respondents said the Government had achieved “a fair amount” and two per cent said “a great deal”. Eight per cent said they were unsure.
