Bridget Phillipson, the shadow education secretary, said she understood the “strength of feeling” within the Labour Party on the Gaza ceasefire issue following the resignation of Imran Hussain from the frontbench. But she said she believed a “humanitarian pause” remained the right approach.

Asked if Labour was united on Gaza, Ms Phillipson told Sky News: “I do understand colleagues’ strength of feeling on this. We, all of us everyday, see on our television screens, the horrifying images of the growing humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

“We all of us saw the absolutely appalling atrocities committed by Hamas. We know that hostages are still being held and everyday when further unspeakable crimes come to light in terms of what happened in Israel on the 7th of October, it is appalling and shocking.”

She added: “What we all want to see is a humanitarian pause to get more aid into Gaza. It is absolutely essential that happens.

“But in the long run this will require a lasting political settlement and that is why I do welcome the involvement of the US government and the international community to make sure we get to a position where we have a secure Israel alongside a viable Palestinian state.”
