Shapps insists Tories ‘absolutely’ can turn things around after dire poll
Grant Shapps said the Tories “absolutely” can turn around their electoral fortunes as he responded to a new YouGov survey which suggested the Conservatives could be heading for a 1997-style wipeout.
Asked if he believed the Tories could turn the situation around, the Defence Secretary told Times Radio: “Absolutely. Absolutely.
“And look, the reason I think we can turn it around is because at least people know we have got a plan and we are working to it. There isn’t a plan under Labour.”
Ex-Cabinet warns Tories will be ‘destroyed’ unless small boats are stopped
Rishi Sunak has been warned the Tories will be “destroyed” at the next general election unless he delivers on his pledge to stop the boats.
Sir Simon Clarke, the former Cabinet minister, said the “time for half measures is over” as he responded to a new YouGov poll which suggested the Tories are heading for a 1997-style election wipeout.
The survey of 14,000 people forecasts that the Conservatives will retain just 169 seats, while Labour will sweep to power with 385 – giving Sir Keir Starmer a 120-seat majority.
Sir Simon tweeted: “This result would represent a disaster for [the Conservatives] and our country. The time for half measures is over. We either deliver on small boats or we will be destroyed.”
