Singer Lata Mangeshkar, one of India’s greatest cultural icons, has died at the age of 92.
She died due to the failure of several organs at a hospital in Mumbai after she was admitted on January 11 because of COVID-19, hospital officials said.
Born in 1929 in India before independence, Mangeshkar began singing as a teenager and sang more than 15,000 songs in 36 languages in her 73-year career.
Infinitely revered as the “queen of tunes” and “Indian nightingale”, she wowed listeners with her tumultuous voice and range, singing everything from patriotic songs to romantic songs, both in movies and albums.
“I’m incredibly tortured,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted as he responded to the news.
“The kind and caring Lata Didi has left us. She leaves a void in our nation that cannot be filled.
“Future generations will remember her as an advocate of Indian culture, whose melodic voice had an incomparable ability to fascinate people.”
According to government sources, there will be a two-day mourning process with the state flag raised.
