Great Britain surprisingly won bronze in the men’s 4x100m relay at the World Championships.

Jonah Efoloko, Charles HughesNethaneel Mitchell-Blake and Reece Prescod placed third behind Canada and the United States in 37.83 seconds.

The new team helped shake off some of the pain from last year’s Olympics when Hughes, Mitchell-Blake, Richard Kilty and CJ Ujah won the silver, only to be stripped of their medal after Ujah’s positive drug test.

This came after the women finished sixth after injury Dina Asher-Smith at Hayward Field.

The 26-year-old injured herself as she approached the final innings with Daryll Neita.

Earlier, Jess Judd and Eilish McColgan finished 13th and 11th respectively in the 5000m final, which was won by Ethiopia’s Gudaf Tsegay.

The women’s 4x400m relay team of Ama Pipi, Laviai Nielsen, Victoria Ohuruogu and Nicole Yeargin advanced to Sunday’s final with a second-place finish for the USA in three minutes, 23.92 seconds.

“We have such strength in the UK. I think we have eight girls under 52 seconds, so we came in and represented our strongest team. I’m really proud to be a part of this team,” said Nielsen.

Already before that, Lorraine Ugen and Jazmin Sawyers qualified for the long jump final in America.

Both British pairs cleared 6.68m to place in the top 12 in qualifying, although they fell short of the automatic mark of 6.75m.

Sawyers, who was eighth at last year’s Tokyo Olympics, posted a season-best finish, while Ugen finished fifth in Group A on Saturday morning in Eugene.

Now they are still waiting for Sunday’s final, the last day of competition.

Sawyers said: “I’m happy – the job in the qualifiers is to get to the final. There are definitely some technical things I can do better, but this is my first World Final at the third attempt, so I’m very happy.

Cindy Sember advanced to Sunday’s semifinals in the 100m hurdles after running 12.67 seconds in her category.
