Veteran BBC newsreader Jan Leeming, 80, tackles a bag robber in a “sleepy” French village after being “rugby tackled” by a masked man at an ATM.

  • Mrs Leeming, 80, says she was ‘very shaken’ and left with a ‘very deep abrasion’.
  • Former BBC news presenter ‘rugby tackled to the ground’ after man
  • He then fled in the car but was unsuccessful in stealing any items
  • She described the incident as a “terrible experience” but says she is “absolutely fine”.

the former BBC Newsreader Jan Leeming fought off an alleged bag robber in a French village who tackled her to the ground at rugby – causing him to escape empty-handed.

Ms Leeming, 80, says she was ‘very shaken’ and suffered a ‘very deep gash’ on her arm after she was attacked while her friends were using a cash machine in a ‘sleepy little village’ in France.

The former news presenter was ‘rugged to the ground’ after a man approached her, appeared ‘polite’ at first and ‘extended his hand’ towards her.

Taking k Twitter after the incident she said: “Terrible experience. Attacked near ATM used by friends.

“The young man looked pleasant and held out his hand – I accepted it like a first class idiot for being polite.” He took up rugby on the ground. The bag was over my arm – he didn’t get it. I have a six centimeter gash on the back of my hand, black and blue.

She added: “It was awful but well staged with the getaway car. My head was very close to the oncoming car.

“I think it was CCTV but he was wearing a mask – the car swerved left so friends couldn’t get the number plate.”

It comes 35 years after she was robbed on the BBC.

Ms Leeming said it “brought back memories of the robberies” at the corporation’s headquarters.

In 1987, three intruders robbed her of her purse and threw ammonia in her face before she ran screaming into the newsroom.

Responding to tweets of sympathy today, she added: “He suggested she should use the machine before him and may have grabbed her money.

He then asked me if I spoke French and held out his hand. I thought it was a friendly gesture. That’s when he knocked me to the ground

“Even if he had been caught, I highly doubt he would have been jailed – I would have slapped his knuckles and told him not to do it again.” In many ways, the law has become soft.

‘What could a man wear? Pepper spray. We cannot allow any emergency, no matter how dire, or we would batten down the hatches and never do anything. You have to live.

There was video surveillance at the ATM, but he was wearing a mask and the getaway car turned the corner almost immediately, so the friends didn’t get the license plate – probably fake anyway.

“The gendarmerie was closed and when the friends called the number, it answered. a great chance of catching them.

‘Please don’t worry. I’m perfectly fine – I’m not the least bit traumatized. Just sore with a few bruises and a massive bandage on my arm.

‘Thank you all so much for your warmth and well wishes.’
