Morocco coach Walid Regragui promised more from his side, who advanced to the last 16 of the World Cup for the first time in 36 years after beating Canada.
Morocco needed a point to secure promotion regardless of the outcome of Group F runners-up Croatia’s meeting with Belgium, which ended in a goalless draw.
Regragui attributed the win to an infusion of home-grown philosophy and inspiration from afar, with his side next playing Group E runners-up Spain.
He added: “We didn’t come just to play or say ‘oh we almost got close’. Of course we want to play our game. Our first half, the way we played, we will double it. But this is not the time for that. We have to get results and do the way all European or South American teams do, Argentina, France.We have to emulate them.
“We had to duplicate the game of the European teams with our own values, so we had to combine and mix the two. Indeed, in the future we have to have a strict, tactical approach with a European style with our own identity. And if we did that, we would win.”
