One thing we can’t deal with is greasy hair. Simply put, they are repulsive. No matter how much you try to control it, oil build-up on the scalp can make your hair feel brittle, dirty or greasy. An excessively oily scalp can also cause unpleasant itching and serve as a haven for the fungus that causes dandruff. Now you can solve this by shampooing your hair. But have you ever wondered why your hair is greasy even after washing it? Read on to find out!

How to get rid of greasy hair?

You should not completely remove all the oil. Your natural oils are essential for a healthy scalp, shiny hair and hair protection. Does this mean you will never be able to completely remove grease from your hair? Well, no. You must first understand the root causes of this problem and then follow the solutions.

Causes of greasy hair even after washing:

Health Shots reached out to Dr. Amit Bangia, Assistant Director, Dermatology Asia Hospital, to understand causes of oily hair.

According to Dr. Bangie: “After a few days, grease and oil are normal. But if your hair is greasy after a fresh wash, something is probably wrong.” Here are all the reasons why:

1. Seborrhea: Seborrhea, a disorder that produces excessive amounts of oil and sebum and makes the scalp look greasy, can be the cause of excessively oily hair.

2. Wrong hair product: Using a product that isn’t meant for oily hair can also cause oil build-up.

3. Unhealthy diet: Dairy products and foods with a high glycemic index can affect androgen hormone levels, which can affect the amount of sebum the skin produces.

4. Greasy hair: To have naturally greasy hair it can also contribute to greasy hair that remains even after washing. In fact, hair that is straight or silky is more likely to get oily.

5. Pollution: Living in a polluted environment can worsen the health of your scalp, which can lead to a number of hair problems, including oily hair, hair damage and dandruff.

In addition to them, unhealthy hair care habits are also responsible for greasy hair. They are here:

  • Your hair is too conditioned or the conditioner is too strong.
  • You wash your hair with warm water.
  • You may not be washing your hair properly or you may be washing your hair too often, which would interfere with sebum production.
  • Even wax, cream and oil based hair care treatments can make your hair more greasy.
  • Hormonal imbalances can also cause excessive sebum production, which can leave hair greasy after washing.

Here’s how to deal with oily hair without damaging your hair or irritating your scalp:

1. Avoid over-conditioning

Avoid washing your hair regularly and using conditioner. This is not a good practice. This can lead to frizzy and greasy hair. Remember that your ends need it more than your scalp or roots. Also, be sure to wash your hair.

2. Use tea tree oil

dr. Bangia suggests using a tree oil-based shampoo, as it can dry out the hair and absorb the oil.” Tea tree oil can also be used directly to massage the scalp. It will help you control dandruff, reduce oiliness, eliminate itching and clean the scalp and hair

3. Avoid hair styling products

Avoid straightening your hair as much as possible. Styling products like wax and conditioners often make your hair more greasy.

4. Moisturize your hair properly

Moisturize your hair regularly. And not just the hair, moisturize the scalp and roots, as fat accumulates on them in addition to the hair. When your hair is well moisturized, it generally looks stronger, has shinier strands and improved scalp health.

5. Apply a homemade scrub

  • One spoon of refined sugar and two spoons of multani mitti should be added to the bowl.
  • Mix some fresh aloe vera in a bowl.
  • Add 1/2 tablespoon of rose water to the thick paste you have created to make it smoother and brighter.
  • Apply to the scalp by parting the hair and leave on for 20 minutes.
